How to Improve Your Sales and Business Development Resume
Your resume is your calling card, especially if the job you’re seeking is a sales or business development executive. That’s why it’s absolutely critical for your resume to include the necessary components that recruiters and hiring managers look for during the recruitment process.
1) Professional Summary
A professional summary helps a recruiter know your main objective as it relates to your career plans. Be concise and avoid run-on sentences when writing your professional summary.
This section of your resume is usually the first impression you make, so make your professional objective a strong, clear statement. Recruiters shouldn’t be left to decipher or guess your professional goals. Spend time online looking at sample resumes and templates to get your creative juices flowing.
Recruiters look for quantifiable achievements, especially if you’re in a sales or business development role. A sales resume that includes specific numbers, like quota met at previous jobs, sales closed, and revenue you’ve generated, is far more compelling to a hiring manager.
Your recruiter doesn’t want to read about the sales presentations you made at a prospective client’s office. Your interviewer really wants to know how many leads you generated, the number of sales you closed, quotas you met, and that you exceeded your sales forecasts. Include key metrics that show a quantifiable achievement such as, “Built global teams that brought seven new products to market and generated over $45M in corporate revenues.”
3) Your Core Competencies
Avoid generalizing about your skill set and specific core competencies and list specific skills that highlight your true strengths. Instead of writing, “I excel in developing strategic plans,” list your technical and strategic skills, such as:
- Market Strategy
- Business Analysis
- Brand Development
- Brand Management
- Partnership Negotiations
- Strategic Planning
- Vendor Management
Avoid using words such as, “top performer,” “goal-oriented,” or other filler words that don’t add any real substance to your resume.
4) Sales Awards and Achievements
If you’ve earned quarterly or annual sales awards, let the numbers do the talking for you. Now is the time to include these key accomplishments to showcase your sales and business development skills. Again, remember to be specific about all of your contributions.
Instead of writing that you received an award for “extensively increasing the company’s customer base,” instead write, “Received quarterly award for increasing the company’s customer base by 70 percent.” Salespeople are responsible for numbers, higher profits, and other corporate gains. Now is not the time to exclude these all-important figures and numbers in your own resume and sales portfolio.
5) Social Media Presence
During an era in which social media is king, your LinkedIn profile and personal website should be a click away so that recruiters can peruse your blog, professional endeavors, and endorsements from previous colleagues and supervisors. Also, in case you’re not aware, employers look at candidate profiles on social media to get a sense of whether or not you are a good fit for their organization. So, be mindful of what you post on social media.
6) Keep Your Resume Updated
Remember to review your resume with a critical eye before your next interview. There’s nothing worse than getting caught off guard and bringing an old, out-of-date resume to your next interview. Keep your resume updated at all times and make sure you include relevant numbers, accomplishments, and proven sales results.
The impression you want to leave the interviewer with is that you can do the job at hand and that you have demonstrated—with a polished resume—that you’re the best candidate for the job.
